The Meaning of Ramadan

Muslims all over the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan!

But what does this month really mean?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, this month is holy because it is believed that in this month the Prophet Muhammad, p.b.u.h revealed the first Quranic verses. This month lasts 30 days and stands out for the purification of the soul, benefiting from peace.

Ramadan manifests itself with several actions, but the most characteristic of this month is fasting, that is, Muslims do not eat or drink anything from morning to evening. During this month, the believers try to increase their prayers (Contact prayer), also increase their good deeds, donating to families in need, increasing the reading of the Quran, etc.!

Fasting as an act begins in the hours before the morning when Muslims have the suhoor (the pre-morning meal), after the first light of the morning, the fasting Muslims must do not eat or drink until the iftar (the evening meal), during In this month, the believers try to get closer to each other and organise iftars with family and friends, trying to earn good deeds. But this act, such as fasting, is not only staying without eating or drinking, the deeds that harm are avoided, the whole body and the whole human being fasts, purifying itself and calming the soul with the blessings of this month. The understanding of fasting is very general but also different, this being confirmed by contemporary science on the positive health effects that fasting brings us.

In the religious worldview it is practised to understand the essence of life and the survival that people have to do without food!

During this month mosques at any time are crowded with believers who go to fulfil their religious obligation to God and perform the prayer. In addition to the 5 times of the daily prayer, muslims in their mosques this month also pray the Taraweeh prayer, it is a prayer consisting of 20 rak’ahs, and from a point of view, all believers do this prayer with great enthusiasm, knowing the benefits of it.

During this month, every family has an obligation to share a certain amount of money for families in need, helping them! But this month there is never a lack of charitable people who commit themselves voluntarily to distribute food to people in need, in this month peace, kindness, chastity, solidarity, are spread by helping each other, and these good deeds to be accepted and to be appreciated by God!

In the continuation, we will have the honour of receiving some interviews written by practitioners of the Islamic religion who have told us about how they understand and feel Ramadan!

“Ramadan is one of the 5 conditions of Islam, it is obligatory for me as well as for other Muslim believers, it has great value for us Muslims. During the month of Ramadan, we celebrate our blessings, as in our prayers, in everything we do. Ramadan forbids us from eating and drinking. Ramadan doesn’t stop us from doing our activities.

As for what feeling Ramadan gives us, it’s a feeling, there’s no description, it’s a feeling, it can’t be expressed in words just the moment before iftar, waiting with the whole family at the food table, it’s a very beautiful and pleasant moment. Ramadan unites us as a family, it simply connects us spiritually to all of us believers!” – said Ismail A.

Diola L. shared her thoughts about Ramadan,  and she said that: “Ramadan for me is a holy month, a month that brings risk to our homes, it brings happiness and it is one of the reasons why most of the time we gather with our familiars.”

“Talking about Ramadan worldviews Hava S. said: “Ramadan is not saying that we don’t eat food, it’s a feeling, it’s something that makes us human being, it makes us better, we understand what it’s like not to eat, this month fills us up, it cleans us in every way.

Me and my friends every Ramadan we spend it doing good deeds and charity, also being part of taraweeh and trying to pray as many prayers as we can, it is the most favourite month of the year for me, it is the month that brings us all together every suhoor and every iftar together. It is the most beautiful month of the year!” said Hava S.

Night of Qadr, what does this night mean?

The Night of Qadr is the night in which the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammed p.b.u.h. According to Muslim belief, the prophet Muhammed at the age of 40 was visited by the angel Jibril (Gabriel) when he was staying in the Hira cave near Mecca. This visit by Jibril to the prophet Muhammed was made on one of the last 10 days of Ramadan, but this night is not known for sure, but in the Quran it is transmitted that this night is better than 1000 months and that on this night peace lasts until the break of dawn. During the last 10 days of Ramadan, Muslim believers try to do good deeds every night, pray, read the Quran, give alms, and become more peaceful, so that if you do good deeds, they will give you endless goodness!
