Victor Wembanyama : A New Giant In the NBA
In recent years, there has been a new giant player that has been destroying the competition on the court. His name is Victor Wembanyama. He is the newest rising star in the NBA, standing at a whopping 7”4’ tall (2.24 m). Rightfully so, his nickname is “The Alien”, being so unusually tall. His is also nicknamed a generational talent by many critics far and wide.

Victor Wembanyama (full name: Victor Nonga Wembanyama-de Fautereau-Vassel) was born on 4th of January 2004 in France in the Le Chesnay Paris region. His Father Félix, was born in Belgium and is of Congolese origin. He was a track and field athlete who competed in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Félix acquired French nationality by naturalisation in 2003. Victor’s mother, Élodie de Fautereau is a former French basketball coach and former player. Before Wembanyama focused on basketball, he played football as a goalkeeper and practised judo. He learned to play basketball from his mother, who was coaching youth teams. At age seven Wembanyama began playing for Entente Le Chesnay Versailles, before joining the youth stem of Nanterre (2 at age 10. He drew the attention of Nanterre in 2013 after Michaël Allard, a youth coach for the club, noticed him on the bench at an under-11 game due to his exceptional height, at 1.80m (5ft 11in), initially mistaking him for a coach. In February 2018, Wembanyama was loaned to FC Barcelona for the Minicopa del Rey, an Under-14 tournament in Spain, leading his team to third place. He declined an offer to continue his career with Barcelona, citing that the coaches were not willing to challenge him.

Victor Wembanyama began his professional NBA career in 2023 when he was selected as the first overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs.
In his rookie season (2023–2024), he quickly became one of the best young players in the league. He averaged over 21 points and 10 rebounds per game and led the NBA in blocks.
Because of his outstanding performances, he won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Since then, Wembanyama has continued to improve. He has been selected as an All-Star and is now one of the most important players on his team. By the 2025–2026 season, he is already averaging around 24 points and 11 rebounds per game, showing that he is becoming a true superstar.

Victor is a very special and interesting player. Firstly, and most obviously, he is 7ft4in tall, very tall even for NBA standards. But unlike other NBA players his height, which are very slow and passive, he is very fast and skilled which is rare. He can shoot, dribble and defend like the smaller players in the league. In combination with his enormous height, that is an unwavering and overpowered combination for one player. Also known for blocking shots- he is also an experienced defender, and is considered one of the best.

We can see that he is an accomplished player through his stats. For example, he averages around 24 points and 11 rebounds per game, showing that he is an aggressive player on the court. But, he also averages multiple blocks per game, showing that he is both aggressive and is competent defensively. He is also able to score from a long distance and near the basket. Proving that he is an extremely versatile player.

Some of his recent successes are things like: Leading his team (Sam Antonio Spurs) to one of their best seasons in years, he is also considered a possible MVP candidate already, and he is also one of the most exciting young players in the league.
In conclusion, Victor Wembanyama is one of the most exciting young players in basketball today. His talent, hard work, and unique playing style make him stand out from others. Even at a young age, he has already achieved great success in the NBA. If he continues to improve, he may become one of the greatest players in the future. Many fans and experts believe that he will change the game and inspire the next generation of basketball players.
