The Drastic Ways Technology Affects Society & Mankind

“We become what we behold, we shape our tools and therefore our tools shape us”– is a quote by Marshall McLuhan, which is a very accurate way of describing the current state of mankind in the modern world. Technology is, without a doubt, the greatest achievement of the human race. Technology has single-handedly carried humanity to the top of the food chain and has made it the dominant species on planet Earth. In other words, we owe a lot to technology and all the ways it has made us more adapted to our surroundings. But technology can not always be so helpful and protective. Technology can also destroy. Think of atomic bombs, factory emissions, deforestation and depopulation of native species of their natural habitat just for the sake of humankind. In how many ways does technology affect us and the world exactly?

1. Communication & Social Interaction

Social media connects people. This enables people across the globe to be more connected and interlinked. It creates real-time collaboration and knowledge sharing. But it isn’t always so fun and dandy. An overreliance on social media reduces that face-to-face connection that is crucial, especially in young people. A lack of outside, natural input of human communication will create feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression.

2. Work & Economy

In the economy, technology has transformed the way people work. For example, automation AI and advanced software make solving repetitive tasks faster, boost productivity, and create new career opportunities in tech-driven industries. Remote work and collaboration platforms have allowed people to work from home or anywhere around the globe. But, this also carries a lot of risks – people who work in retail, manufacturing, and administrative sectors are at risk of losing their jobs to AI and automation. This will displace millions of people from the workforce, and it will create economic inequality. With the rate at which technology is evolving, it can leave workforce training lagging behind, creating tension between innovation and social stability.

3. Education & Knowledge

Education and knowledge have become more accessible due to technology. Online learning platforms, open-source courses, and educational apps have allowed individuals to be able to acquire skills and information. Students can attend virtual lessons, collaborate on digital projects, and the students are free to learn at their own pace. Yet, these benefits are not evenly distributed. People without reliable internet access or modern devices are left behind, creating social inequality. Moreover, the rise of AI-powered tools that can generate essays, answers, or even artwork raises questions about academic integrity and authenticity.

4. Culture & Creativity

Technology reshapes culture and creativity. Digital tools allow anyone to produce music, art, films, and literature. Lowering the barriers to creative expression and enabling voices to reach global audiences. Streaming services and online communities provide instant access to cultural content from around the world. Yet, the algorithms that recommend that content can also narrow exposure, promoting popular or sensational material over niche or meaningful works. This influences cultural consumption patterns and may limit societal appreciation of diversity.

5. Health and Lifestyle

Technological innovation in health has dramatically improved human well-being. Wearable devices can monitor heart rate, sleep patterns, and physical activity, providing insights that encourage healthier lifestyles. But also, technology can also negatively impact health. Excessive screen time and social media use are linked to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and attention span disorders. Sedentary lifestyles, or lifestyles that have little to no physical activity, can contribute to obesity and other chronic diseases.

In each of these areas, one clear pattern arises: technology often advances faster and outpaces social norms. Whether it’s AI, algorithms or automation, society frequently struggles to catch up. Most modern-day humans feel detached, anxious or with the thought of being purposeless when there is a much smarter and faster machine that can do what they do – but better. With that being said, it is pretty easy to feel out of place in the modern world.

It’s ironic. The internet is made to connect people more easily. And yet, people have never felt so out of touch. The vast, enormous swaths of information are put in place to make us more informed and smarter. And yet, we live in the era of mass disinformation and confusion. If you haven’t read between the lines, now is the perfect time to act. Now. Right now. We are in desperate need of each other, our company and cooperation. If not now, then when? We need to gather and solve all of these problems together, for our continuous existence and well-being.
