Teen Styles over the Decades
Fashion is an interesting way for teenagers to express themselves and trends have changed a lot over the years. So, let’s take a quick look at teen fashion through the decades.
1960s: “The Birth of Youth Culture”
The ‘60s brought colorful mini-skirts and bell-bottom jeans, featuring bold patterns. The hippie movement however introduced tie-dye and flowy dresses, influenced by bands like “The Beatles”!
In the ‘70s, teens often wore platform shoes, flare jeans and bohemian outfits. The disco culture added flashy sequins and bright colors, where graphic tees and denim jackets also started getting popular.
1980s: “Big Hair and Bold Styles”
The ‘80s were all about making a statement with big hair, neon colors and oversized clothes. Styles ranged from flashy disco to preppy clothes to accessorized punk outfits influenced by movies like “The Breakfast Club”!
1990s: “Grunge and Minimalism”
The ‘90s brought a mix of styles. Pulled heavily from grunge and skater styles that thrived in the 90s, teens ditched bright colors for darker shades. Platform shoes as well as Nike sneakers had a dramatic rise in popularity!
2000s: “Pop Culture Influence”
Now, our beloved Y2K aesthetic: teen fashion in the 2000s was over-the-top, with lots of layers and statement accessories: low rise pants, really baggy jeans and shirts, crop-tops and backwards hats were a go-to! Skater styles also gained a lot of popularity in the early 2000s, still influenced by the 90s.
In the 2010s plaids and stripes dominated as prints, paired mainly with neutral pieces. Thrift shopping also became very trendy with teens combining new and old styles, high waisted jeans and chokers leading the way.
2020s: “Inclusivity and Sustainability”
Today’s teen fashion mainly focuses on being inclusive to everybody, no matter their style. Sustainability and comfort also play a huge part today. Eco-friendly brands, oversized clothes and athletic streetwear are often worn by teens nowadays!
Some personal favorite styles are metalhead, grunge, skater (sk8er), Y2K, goth, cyber grunge and my favorite celebrity style is probably Avril Lavigne’s! I’d recommend you check out her and her music!
So, what do you think? How do you think teen fashion has evolved? For the better or for the worse? What’s your favorite style? And what do you think the future has in store for us…?
